really fabulous creations in the gallery
passionate memories spoken, many tears from Dennis
good conversational direction by Gary, interesting questions, insights
new perspectives, confirmed ideas and fresh inspirational ideas for me- a sculpture is WHOLE- A FRONT AND A BACK- and all angles- REALITY
A PAINTING IS ONLY PART- A FRONT. THE BACK IS HIDDEN, THE SIDES ARE BLANK! IT IS ONLY 2.D!
Main points of interest jotted throughout discussion:
Painting is about trying to show something as vivid as nature.
Bomberg respected Cubism but thought it wasn’t enough- he didn’t want to reduce aspiration (Cubism= nature simplified to geometry) He wanted to paint his sensations!
PAINT WHAT YOU SEE!
Look for THE SPIRIT IN THE MASS and capture it
Gary to Dennis: Do you need a figure as a starting point, to react to? Would painting something abstract be a dangerous activity in terms of your possibility to allow it to be too self absorbed? (ie the painting would totally reflect the artist, as opposed to reflecting the artists emotional interaction with something living.)
Dennis: I am concerned about THE LIFE IN ART and painting people is very inspirational. The thing is THERE IS A SPIRIT IN THE MASS of people. People ARE ALIVE!
Freud: terrifying paintings, too much detail, inhumane amount of observation.
Rothko: Abstract but I (Gary and Georgia) say t has a SPIRIT. Dennis says Rothko’s paintings have no spirit due there being no heads!
FORM IN PAINTING:
Spirit in a painting. What is FORM? Spiritual, living. Physicality, Vitality.
Vitality in an artists processes needs to be visible in the final piece of work.
USE THE COLOURS YOU FEEL LIKE USING!!! FEEL FEEL FEEL IT LIVE BELIEVE IN IT MAKE IT
Matisse felt colour- a view of Notre Dame, from his window when he lived in Paris.
Dennis spent two years roving Britain in a camper-van, drawing every single Cathedral.
IS PAINTING ALL ABOUT THE CONNECTIONS AND EMOTIONAL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE ARTIST AND THEIR SUBJECT AND THE ARTIST WITH THEIR PROCESSES? DOES THIS MAKE PAINTING ALWAYS AT LEAST PARTIALLY AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL?
Painting is about all of the senses working together in harmony.
PIECES WHICH AMALGAMATE TO MAKE THE WHOLE MUST BE HONOURED AS IMPORTANT IN THEMSELVES IN ORDER TO MAKE THE WHOLE WHOLE WHOLE.
Artists must break through convention and expectations and do what they feel is right at the time.
DENNIS: ARTISTS MUST HARNESS PRIDE BUT NO EGOTISM
Be proud to be an artist!
THE SPIRIT OF THE MASS is found in ALL OF NATURE.
Being an artist is about giving the spirit of the mass (identified in living things) another firm of embodiment (paintings/ sculptures
Observation: The moons size varies dramatically whether we see it near the horizon when it appears huge, or near the zenith when it appears small. A long time ago Bomberg puzzled over how do we communicate this illusion as a painter?
Teaching art is about trying to help students do what they want to do.
